The idea of the interconnectedness of all things is central to the tribal way of looking at the world. practical knowledge of the environment, of crops and medicines, of hunting and fishing, is a byproduct of it. the makuna believe that human beings, animals, and all of nature are parts of the same one. animals and fish live in their own communities, which are just like human communities, with their chiefs, their shamans, their dance houses, their songs, and their material possessions. when human peoples dance in this world, the shaman invites the animal people to dance in theirs. if humans do not dance and shamans do not offer spirit food to the animal people, the animals will die out and there will be no more game left in the world. for the makuna the radical disjunction so characteristic of western thought between nature and culture, men and animals, dissolves. eastern colombia amazon, vaupes region, population: 600

Two climbers dig out their tent after a snowstorm covered them in 14k camp on Mount McKinley, Alaska. Climbers are advised to spare no expense on a expedition-quality tent as it can mean the difference between life and death during a ferocious storm on Denali. Extra poles and repair materials are important in case of damage caused by storms. Plan to take extra pickets, wands or deadmen for tent anchors. Never leave a tent without anchoring it securely. Tents are lost each year due to sudden gusts of wind while the tent was left unattended or drying. Every climbing season High Mountain Rangers of the Denali National Park Service are called to help climbers in need. If possible the patient is brought down to base camp on foot, only in life threatening conditions a helicopter is called to evacuate the patient to a hospital in Anchorage.

USA/CA/Santa Monica/Pier/September 2007:Santa Monica Pier - a landmark in the USA. A surfer (with board, hat and water bottle) walks down the Pier having left the beach front on a warm late summer's afternoon. The beach front Police Station on the Pier adjacent to the carnival rides. The Pier dates from 1909 and still draws in the crowds. It's a nonstop sideshow of activity with street performers, amusement arcade, aquarium, rollercoaster, ferris wheel and the 1922 Looff Hippodrome Carousel (featured in The Sting). It leaves you wondering how all this fits on just one pier. Glorious views out over the beach front and coastline to be had, especially from the ferris wheel.
