Colonel Bird's Bath in the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens in Cape Town, South Africa. It was built by Colonel Christopher Bird, the British Deputy Colonial Secretary during the occupation of the Cape by the British in the early nineteenth century. It was designed to collect the water and let it stand and clarify before being piped to his house for drinking water. It is often incorrectly referred to as Lady Anne Barnard's bath. She was the Colonial Secretary's wife but the bath was built after she left the Cape.

Traditional hay meadows at the head of the Langdale valley, Lake District, UK, are some of the best wild flower hay meadows left in the country. Since the second world war, Britian has lost over 95% of its traditional hay meadows, as farmers have converted to silage.

The Kern Valley Wildlife Refuge in California's Central Valley was created as important resting and feeding grounds for wildfowl migrating along the pacific flyway. After four years of unprecedented drought, the water shortages in California are critical. The reserve has received only 40% of its usual warer, with the result that most of the lake beds are dried up and dessicated, leaving the birds few places to go. This is the only area of lake with any water left.
